Can Poor Air Quality From Septic Runoff Cause Infection, And Could It Be Linked To My Arm Muscle Pain?

I am suffering with muscle pain in both arms. I have had torn rotator cuffs in the past the last being 12/22. My property is being flooded with runoff from a septic system. There is no easy or odor as I think the system is being treated. Is it possible to get an infection from breathing in poor quality air? I raked the leaves recently and my property is large. I have stage 3 kidney disease and am 85

Hello,

Your kidney status means even mild infections or imbalances need early attention. At your age and with CKD, new muscle pain that is bilateral needs evaluation. Pain in both the arms can be indicative of statin-induced myopathy if you take cholesterol medication. It can also be due to age related or overuse injuries of shoulder and neck area.

CKD-related mineral imbalance (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium) can also cause such symptoms. To avoid septic runoff risk, avoid direct contact with water. Wear gloves and wash hands after work in the yard. Report the runoff to local health/environmental authorities even treated systems should not overflow onto private property.

To rule out kidney-related causes for muscle pain, get serum creatinine and eGFR , serum potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and sodium and chloride. Get creatine kinase (CK or CPK), ESR, CRP (C-reactive protein) to help rule out muscle injury or inflammation from overuse or medication. Get CBC, Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and tests for vitamin D done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
