Can Probiotics Cause Anal Itching?

Never had any previous issues other than a rare and occasional hemorrhoid. Starting taking probiotics about two to three weeks ago, and have an itchy anus the last week or so. I like the effect of the probiotics, but have to ask...can taking daily probiotics cause one s anus to itch, and if so, what is the best remedy short of discontinuing the use of the probiotics?

Hi & Welcome.
It is unlikely to be caused by the probiotics.
Probiotics (live microorganisms) are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are gas, flatulence or bloating sensation.

Anal itching can be caused by irritating chemicals in the foods we consume, such as are found in spices, hot sauces, and peppers. It also can be due to the irritation of continuous moisture in the anus from frequent liquid stools, diarrhea, or escape of small amounts of stool (incontinence).
Sexually transmitted infections may involve the anus and cause anal itching. Pinworms can cause persistent anal itching.
Sometimes anal itching is the result of a specific skin condition, such as psoriasis or contact dermatitis.
Medical conditions responsible for itching include chronic diarrhea, hemorrhoids, anal tumors and diseases that affect the whole body, such as diabetes.

You need to consult a physician to rule out the possible causes and the treatment depends on the cause of the problem.
Meanwhile the following self-care measures would be useful in preventing the itching like:

1. After the bowel habits, clean the area with plain water or mild soap & keep the area clean.
2. Avoid scratching as it may further irritates your skin and leads to persistent inflammation. You may find some relief by applying a cold compress to the area or taking a lukewarm bath. Trim your nails short & wear cotton gloves while you're sleeping to help prevent scratching.
3. Avoid irritants like bubble baths, genital deodorants, perfumed soaps, moist wipes, witch hazel products and other items that might irritate the anal area. Cut back on or avoid coffee, cola, alcohol, citrus fruits, chocolate, spicy foods, tomatoes and foods that may cause diarrhea.
4. Avoid overuse of laxatives.
5. Maintain a normal bowel habit, avoid constipation by taking enough dietary fiber (vegetables, fruits, etc) and oral fluids.

Hope the suggestions given above would benefit you.
A feedback is appreciated.
