Can Prolonged Use Of Omeprazole 40 Mg Cause Any Side Effects?

I have been taking Omeprazole 40mg once a day for the past 5 years. prior to that I was taking Protonix 40mg for 6 years. in all I have been reflux free for the past ten years. the initial pain which caused me to see a Gastroenterologist was severe cramping in my chest mimicking a heart attack, I suppose. my concern is a commercial I have seen a number of times citing possible Kidney Failure, or other severe possible life-threatening effects from prolonged use. I want to stop due to what these commercials are stating, but I am not sure other than possibly experiencing discomfort what could happen if I stop, like developing Esophical Cancer, I am a 63 year old male in otherwise perfect health. I weigh 195 and stand 6 2. just had a physical and all of my vitals are fine. Please let me know what you think about the study, and suggestions for my concerns, Thank you, Frank Campili

Hi,

You are suffering from gastro-esophageal reflux disease and for that purpose proton pump inhibitors like osmerprazole are usually advised but there prolonged use can cause side effects like osteoporosis of bones and decrease in blood cell counts and long-term use is also associated with high risk of cancers. I would recommend you to avoid its use.
