Can Schizophrenia Be Passed On Genetically?

LMy sons father was diagonsed with schitzopherinia upon releleased from the Navy over approx 50 yrs ago. My qestion is it heritity as my son also two kids, and his little girl aprox age 12, has been having problems with anger issues and is ok for a few weeks but then seems to hav complete mental breakdowns an screaming fits an lack of despect for anyone in authority, as my son , 42 as also been sweet an careing one time he visits and next time he visits is vulger an defiant tward everyone in the family. Guess my main question is, is this heridity.???

Schizophrenia is a mental condition which has got a wide range of symptoms. There are specific diagnostic criteria under the DSM V guideline and only if certain features are present then the person can be provided with diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Certain mental health conditions can be hereditary and the problem with your son needs to be addressed carefully after complete clinical assessment. It is better to consult a psychiatrist and then get him treated for his symptoms with close follow up. However please note that not all mental problems are hereditary and not every one passes it to their children.

Apart from hereditary, mental conditions are also due to the combined effect of individual, environmental and social factors and therefore his upbringing might have an influence on his mental health.
