Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Friday morning I felt what I thought was a mosquito bite on the top of my head through my hair. I felt small welt and it itched. I didn t think much about it until about 24 hours later when it started to hurt and had much more intense itching. After another 24 hours I went to the after hours clinic and they thought it was probably a staph infection. Shingles (which I ve had before) was discussed but prescribed a course of doxycycline and said staph was most likely since it was mostly in the center of my scalp and not on one side. Now its been 24 hours since I started the antibiotics and since it hasn t been long enough for them to start working, I m still not sure if its staph. Today the itching is very intense. It hurts, too, but the itching is most notable to me. I have also noticed about 3 very small itchy bumps around the main welt. The whole top of my scalp feels like its crawling its so itchy. When I had shingles, the main complaint was intense itching. And it was a very small patch on the back of my leg. Can shingles be on the top of my head and not on one side?

Can Shingles Appear On The Top Of Head?
Hi The symptoms are more likely to be an insect bite allergy or a bacterial infection like staph as you have mentioned. Continue with the course of antibiotics for 3 more days.Antihistamines should be taken to reduce itching. The area can be cleaned with antiseptic solution and kept dry. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards Dr.Saranya Ramadoss, General and Family Physician
