Can Sinus Infection Cause Swollen Uvula With Yellowish Patch?

Hi, Seeing as today is Saturday, am planning returning to clinic on Monday. Wondering if urgent care before then? And, what would cause uvula swelling and yellowish patch on it? Background: I ve been having a severe sinus infection for past 2 months; with last few weeks increasing sinus pressure around both eyes and bridge of nose. As of 11/17/14 I m now on 3rd round of antibiotics; 2 times daily for 10 days. Each antibiotic has been different with varying dosages. On 11/19/14, two days into new antibiotic (Augmentin), I noticed worsening nasal congestion as tho it was now draining down past nose bridge but slightly above the nostrils. There is minimal to no nasal drainage in my throat. On 11/20/14 my throat began to get hoarse. 11/21/14 was same with increased fatigue. Today, 11/22/14 woken several times with a swollen uvula, increased swelling each time awakening, plus now there s a yellowish patch on the uvula. Unsure if it might be a side reaction / allergic reaction to the new antibiotic. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you have got infection in the throat that has extended from the sinuses via nasopharynx to the throat leading to swelling and inflammation of the throat and swelling and yellow patch over the uvula is known as Uvulitis is also secondary to infection..
Hoarseness in voice is due to infection in vocal cords leading to Laryngitis..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get a proper evaluation done and he can advise you certain investigations like Throat swab culture, IgG [Immunoglobin G] levels, complete blood picture as well as PNS view or MRI of sinuses..
A proper antibiotic course as per the diagnosis of the exact strain of organisms causing infection will be advised along with anti-inflammatory painkillers, warm saline gargles, steam inhalations and use a humidifier in your room..
Oral Decongestants like Pseudoephadrine can also be advised..
Chew Vitamin C pellets and suck throat lozenges..
You can also use decongestant nasal sprays [xylometazoline], saline nasal irrigations and steroid nasal sprays..
Avoid chilled foods..
Speak less to avoid straining your vocal cords..
Sip on plenty of warm water..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
