Can Sinus Pressure Cause Retinal Detachment?

I have had retinal detachments due to eye problems in the past. I notice when it is very humid or rainy and I am feeling inflammed from this---so does the back of my eye. It seems like it just feels swollen back there but no pain. Can sinus pressure in the back of your eyes in a person like me actually cause a detachment. If so, should I get prednisone drops when i am feeling pressure behind my eye? Thx Kim

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Retinal detachment generally happens without any pain. The patient may in some cases sense pressure in the back of the eye when the retinal detachment is happening. Sinus pain is not a cause for retinal detachment but if you violently press and scratch your eyes local eye trauma may favor retinal detachment.

So, if you get that pressure in the back of the eye and your vision is changing, this is very likely, not due to sinus pain but possibly a retinal detachment happening. In this case, you will need to see your doctor as soon as possible because steroids (prednisone drops) do not treat retinal detachment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
