Can Smoke From A Forest Fire Cause Breathing Difficulty?

my wife has difficulty breathing and is only semi lucid today. Had a dry cough and intermittent fever over past week but fever gone now. she is resting in bed but breathing with a bit of difficulty today. She is cool to the touch and pale skin. We had heavy smoke last night in town from forest fire 25 miles away and local smoke isn t getting better. She has MS for 20 years

Yes, heavy smoke can cause difficulty in breathing.
Smoke inhalation actually causes irritation and inflammation of airways and this in turn causes bronchitis.
So better to take her to pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
She will need inhaled bronchodilators (formoterol or salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (budesonide or fluticasone).
Don't worry, she will be alright with all these.
