Can Sudden Stopping Of Statins Cause Cataract Or Other Eye Problems In A Person Who Had Detached Retina?
I have been on statins for approx 3 years and am 48 yrs old. 13 months ago, I had a detached retina. Now I have developed a cataract in the same eye. I am also having issues with the other eye. I stopped taking my statin presciption last week. Since I had never had any eye issues before the detached retina, I believe my eye troubles must be due to taking statins. Can statins be the cause of my eye troubles?
Hello Statins are lipid lowering drugs and they are known to be associated with cataract formation on long term use. It seems from the history that you are using statins and now you have stopped taking statins. However the use of statins must be carefully weighed against the risks and continued for your problems.
Statins are known to be associated with cataract but they are not responsible for retinal detachment.
Thank you
