Can Switching From Tegretol To Lamictal Cause Any Problem?

Hi,

My name is Allison and I am 25 years old. I am epileptic and have been taking Tegreol XR (600mg per day) for the past 15 years. My husband and I want to start trying to have children within the next year or two. I have recently moved to a different city, and my new neurologist is really pressuring me to switch to Lamictal before my husband and I start trying to conceive. My seizures have been controlled 100% while on the Tegretol, and the only 3 times I have had seizures have been when I was trying to phase off of the medication in my teens. The idea of switching makes me very nervous - siezures are no fun! I have read some of the forums at WWW.WWWW.WW of women who have had normal, healthy babies on Tegretol. Also, I have been taking 400 mg of folic acid since age 19 on the recommendation of my previous neurologist, just to "get me ready" for a healthy fetal environment for the future. So please, what is your advice? Should I seriously consider switching from Tegretol to Lamictal? Thank you!
