Can Swollen Tonsils Be Due To Alcohol?

Hello, my tonsils become bothersome several times a year(usually a reaction to allergies, animal dander, pollen, tonsiliths etc). recently though, when drinking whiskey for the first time in quite a while it felt like my tonsils had swollen. just wondering if this is a normal reaction to alcohol and if I am just being paranoid or if this is something to be concerned about. Thanks for your help and have a great day.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of recurrent tonsillar infection, enlargement and so on, this time after taking alcohol. Since tonsil is composed of lymphoid tissues it can get enlarged due to infection, allergy and so on. Hence I would advise you to consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, examination and investigations. Tests of blood for CBC, kidney function, sugar and anything else as your Doctor would advise.

Secondly, make a list of the foods, beverages, factors that increase allergy and tonsillar problems. Avoid all these at any cost. Medical treatment will be as per the advise of your examining Doctor or ENT Specialist. If there are more than 3 attacks of tonsillitis in one year or too much enlargement of the tonsils then removal may be considered hence discuss this point too with your doctors.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
