Can Taking Alzheimer S Medications Cause Hair Loss?

I am suddenly noticing a great amount of hair loss. I am 74 years old with recent early diagnosis of Alzheimer s disease. I recently retired from my job and moved next door to my son and his family so I would have someone to look after me in my aging years. I have lived alone for over 35 years and have had moderately good health during that time. Have had high blood pressure and high cholesterol but have been on medication for those for about 15 years and its working fine. I have only noticed the hair loss in the last 3 months or so since I started medication for the Alzheimer s and one for anxiety. Any Ideas on the cause of the hair loss?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are wondering if taking Alzheimer s medications cause hair loss . Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons like genetic factor , fungal infection and hormonal changes. Hair fal can also occur due to side effects of certain medicine , so also concern your neurologist and discuss the the condition so that doctor can alter the medicine or prescribe its substitute. Take Indian goose berry powder with water once a day and use olive for massage. Keep your scalp dry. I would suggest you to consult dermatologist for proper examination. Doctor may order skin patch test , blood test and physical examination. Doctor may prescribe you drug like finpecia at least for 3-4 months or anti fungal treatment along with minoxidil spray . Doctor may also prescribe supplements like Vitamin A ,Omega-3 and Vitamin E . Doctor may also recommend hair transplant with HUE technique.
