Can Taking Doxycycline-Hyclate While Breast Feeding Cause Hives To The Infant?

We have a daughter in Arkansaw that had a C section 3 months ago. Her daughter is 3 months old . Our daughter Kathy has 2 swollen fallopian tubes and was having a fever so Dr.s put her on Doxycline Hyclate and is breast feeding. The baby has had thrush for 4 days, and now is on Nystatin. Today the baby has broken out in hives, and the Dr is telling Kathy to continue to breast feed. I am concerned that the baby is allergic to the Doxycycline Hyclate. Do you support my concerns?

Hi,

The prolonged intake of Doxycycline by mother can cause oral thrush as well as allergic rash in breast fed child. Similarly if the baby is on oral Nystatin-- it also can cause allergy. In my view mother should stop feeding the baby (Mother should keep on expressing breast milk so as to continue milk secretion and restarting barest feeding after she stops Doxycycline) till she is cured.

Give the baby top feed along with proper cleaning of her oral cavity, with help of wet linen wrapped around mother's little finger and applying simple glycerin borax / gel containing Miconazole to affected part. She should also get B complex drops supplement. Mother should get oral Lactobacilli supplement and breast feed started after the course of Doxycycline is over.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
