Can Taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Cause Intense Cramps During Periods?

I am on Ortho tri cyclen lo's generic. I still have 4 pills left until the sugar pills, and I woke up this morning with my period. Is that normal? Also, lately I have been having intense cramps that only last about a couple of minutes and they go away. But it seems like I am having that every day.
