Can Tampons Cause Vaginal Pain?

I have my period right now (im 21 and have been getting it for years) but this month hurts abnormally when i put in or remove my tampon. I did have intercourse exactly 2 weeks ago but I know this isn't a pain caused from sex. Not sure why this is happening, Also my period is about a week early (just finished my last one on June 3rd and got this one on the 25th) thought this was odd.
