Can The Black Streaks In Mucus Be The Cause Of My Detriorating Reporatory Healthy?

hi, i am an ashtmatic and i have been having a thick nasal drip which seems to be affecting my lungs for a few months now and i have great difficulty breathing and it is geting wost with each passing day. my chest is also very tight but i am not wheezing, ( when using the peak flow meter i can only get to MAX) i have also noticed that i have been bringing down from my sinuses alot of mucus with black streaks in it. i am very concerned because my resporatory health has been greatly affected. it really scary not being able to breath properly 90% of the time. Can these black streaks in my mucus be the cause of my detriorating reporatory health? what is causing these black streaks? what is causing this? my doctor put me on symbicort and allegra D. but they have not been helping. PLEASE HELP.

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, possibility of worsening of asthma (exacerbation) is more in your case.
Most likely cause for this is lung infection. You are also producing a lot of mucus with black streaks (likely blood). All these favour lung infection (pneumonia) more.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Clinical examination of respiratory system
2. Chest x ray
3. PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
Chest x ray is needed to rule pneumonia.
PFT will tell you about severity of the disease and treatment of asthma is based on severity only.
You may need antibiotics, additional inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
Don't worry, you will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
