Can The Medication Of Plan B Stop Ovulation?

I was suppose to ovulate anywhere around the 12th of May to the 17th of May. I had sex on Thursday, May 12th at around 12pm at night. I took plan b on Saturday, May 14th because I was not sure if I had used protection that night. According to ovulation calendars online I should have ovulated on the 14th (not really sure if I ovulate at the same time each month though). So I took the plan b on the 14th and then mistakenly had unprotected sex the night of Tuesday, May 17th. I know plan b is suppose to delay ovulation but can it also stop you from ovulating at all? I am very, very nervous that I could be pregnant because I am pretty sure sperm got inside of me on the 17th. I did not take plan b a second time, I just took it the one time on the 14th. What are the chances I am pregnant? I would be less nervous if I had not taken the plan b because I am not sure how it messes up ovulation. Please let me know any information about this and any advice!

Hi,

Yes, Plan-B can stop ovulation. Plan-B is up to 94% effective in preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours following an unprotected sex it is more effective the sooner after the sex it is taken. Since you have taken Plan-B within 24 hours there is nothing to worry. Plan-B prevents pregnancy by preventing or delaying ovulation. It also works to prevent fertilization of an egg by affecting the cervical mucus or the ability of sperm to bind to the egg.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
