Can The Same Medicine Be Given For Hypothyroidism And Hyperthyroidism?

Hi I have been diagnosed as hypothyrodism and the doctor advised me to take thyronorm 50mcg for 7 days 100mcg for next 7 days and 150 mcg was to next 30 days. after taking 50mcg I became normal when I started taking 100mcg I started getting giddiness tired stress. When I check the thyroid profile TSH level became lower than normal. So the doctor advised me take 75mcg for 30days and 100mcg for next 30days. My question is when the TSH level going lesser than normal means it is hyper thyroidism. Then how come the same medication thyronorm can be used for htpo and hyper thyrodism. Kindly clarify me.

Hello,

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It can cause a number of symptoms, such as tiredness, poor ability to tolerate cold, constipation, depression, and weight gain or inability to lose weight.

Thyronorm (or Levothyroxine) is the treatment of Hypothyroidism. It is similar to the hormone produced by the thyroid gland.

It is recommended to repeat the TSH test 6 weeks after starting Thyrnorm to adjust the Thyronorm dosage.

With 100 mcg thyronor/day your TSH test became lower than normal. This condition is called Factitious or Iatrogenic hyperthyroidism.
This occurs because the prescribed dosage of hormone medicine is too high.

To resume my answer: You have Hypothyroidism and you need to take Thyronorm every day.
You had a higher dosage of Thyronorm for a period of time and this caused iatrogenic Hyperthyroidism. The solution (in your circumstances )is a lower dose of Thyronorm, in order to normalize your TSH test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
