Can Toe Hyperextension Have Caused Turf Toe With Swelling?

i bent my toe backwards in self defense class about 20 days ago. went to the doctor because my toe way swollen and couldnt walk. she gave me meds for gout. i took them till last night with no relief. last night i read about turf toe and i taped up my toe. today i feel alot better. could she have been wrong?
