Can Treatment For Bulimia Cause Vomiting And Dizziness?

Hello, I am 23 years old and a bulimic for the last 6/7 years. I am in therapy for treatment, but not the treatment of bulimia. It s only to work on childhood trauma. Since I started therapy (3 months now) my bulimia got way worse. I am throwing up every full meal I am eating, only keeping snacks like gummy bears etc. down. I am also taking laxatives, diuretics and I am exercising on a daily basis. In addition to that I am not sleeping much because I have exams this month. I am really scary that something might happen because of what I am doing. But I am not scared enough to stop binging and purging every day. Can you please tell me if there are any signs that I should be looking for if something bad is gonna happen. Like do I feel like sick or something before I get a heart attack or anything like that? Because I do wanna stay healthy . For example, when I feel dizzy I make sure that I eat something with sugar so that I don t pass out. Please let me know. I am so scared :(

Psychiatrist 's  Response
dear,
I can understand the distress the condition is causing to you.

Here in your case, there are certain issues that we need to focus on and side by you also need to get your facts corrected.
1) how to tackle your bulimia?
here i would suggest your treating clinician, to add a course of tab fluoxetine 20mg in morning to start with and then gradually build up every weekly until the response is observed. It will continue for next two months. In case if you are not prescribed one.
More information regarding your ongoing treatment medications may help here. Secondly, it will also take care of your low mood and depressive symptoms, which are quite evident from your complaints here.
2) I strongly suggest, him to add a long acting benzodiazepines like tab clonazepam 0.5 in morning, which will reduce the anxiety symptoms.

Also you need to be very patient, as for the treatment to kick in it may take at least 2 weeks, and get this very clear that it is not required to eat frequently to maintain your blood levels.
stop the use of laxatives, diuretics as they may cause harm than be useful. they may lead to serious side effects that can make you land up in hospital. Avoid purging as it may bring down your electrolyte levels and may result in dizziness.
An exam stress may worsen these symptoms, therefore a timely intervention of psychiatrist may help you big deal.

consult a local psychologist who will help you with the psychotherapy sessions.

I hope to have satisfied you with the problem, for further consultation you are always welcome.
thanks
