Can Turmeric Supplement Be Taken While On Coumadin And Prednisone?
I have fibromyalgia, heart disease, IBS and spinocerabeller ataxis. I just got off an allergy and bronchitis bout from our hurricane in Fla. I do not like taking meds but was on prednizone, anti-biotics, allergy and cold meds for week to 10 days. I also take coumadin for the last 16 years. what side effects does tumeric have and would I be safe taking it. I would consult my doctor first.

Coumadin is also known as Warfarin. Warfarin is given in heart disorder to prevent clot formation. It's dose has to be adjusted normally to keep a strict INR range. In simple words, this medicine is to be monitored regularly for its effectiveness.
Coumadin also have interaction with many food items which either increase or decrease it's effect. Hence, whenever Coumadin is prescribed, a list of avoidable food items is usually given. Turmeric in excess is found to increase the role of Coumadin, making risk of bleeding.
If you are using turmeric regularly and taking it as a supplement then do consut your physician. However, a pinch of it in diet is not harmful but still consult your physician for the same.
