Can Weight Training Be Resumed Post TFCC Surgery?

Hello, I am writing about my tfcc injury that happened 11 months ago while training in the gym. I was doing my normal workout and done some upright rows with slightly bad form making the wrist take all the weight. There was no pain at first but the next morning I could not move my wrist. I took 3 weeks off suspecting it was tendonitis then returned to training through the pain. It got to the point where the pain was unbearable so I went to see the doctors to get further examination. After a few months of waiting I got my MRI scan which came back with a partical tear in the TFCC. I was given a cortisone shot which seems to have helped. I have not lifted in 8 months by this point now but if I want to return to weights I think I will have to get surgery although the doctor does not seem to sure as I can do everything else without trouble but if I attempt to lift weights it aggravates it. I am really depressed by all this because lifting weights is my passion. I was wondering if people do make a return to bodybuilding/ weight training after TFCC surgery my specialist does not seem to positive about the whole situation.

Hello,

I am not going to sugar coat it, but recovery post surgery will be a long road. Do not start lifting immediately. You will need to go through the steps. Post surgery, after a brief recovery period, you will need to start with physiotherapy. You will then slowly start lifting weights under supervision first. Eventually, I feel that you should be able to lift moderate weights. With patients and care you may even be able to get back to normal.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
