Can Withdrawal From Mirapex Help In Healing Stage 3 Kidney Failure?

I am a 78 year old Parkinson s patient. I was diagnosed in 2005. I have been taking Mirapex for several years. I am having pain and stiffness in the back of my knees and joints. I am using a cane or walker. I was reading the side effects of Mirapex and notice it can cause a condition called Rhabdomyelysis which can cause kidney failure. I have learned that I am in stage 3 kidney failure and am having swelling in my arms and legs. If I quit taking Mirapex do you think my kidney s would improve?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Mirapex contains pramipexole as its composition which is a non ergot dopamine agonist. It is commonly prescribed in Parkinson's disease which is due to dopamine deficiency. It is also prescribed in Restless leg syndrome. Mirapex is often combined with Levodopa in Parkinsonism.

The dose of Mirapex should titrated from lower therapeutic dose. If there is any renal impairment, the dose should be adjusted. In severe renal impairment, the maximum dose should be 1.5mg once a day should be administered. Mirapex should be stopped by tapering the dosage. Sudden stoppage of the drug might cause withdrawal symptoms. Attend the physician for further evaluation and management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
