Hello and welcome to HCM, A child with deposition of glycogen in the hepatocytes suggests presence of glycogen storage disease. Glycogen storage disease is a group of diseases caused by defect in the enzymes involved in the metabolism of glucose. Liver in involved commonly in glycogen storage disease called Von Gierke disease. Glycogen can deposit in other organs like heart and in that case it is called Pompe's disease. Deposition of glycogen leads to dysfunction of that particular organ. You have mentioned that the child improves on feeding. This is because glucose is supplied to the child and he improves. The glycogen which is deposited in the hepatocytes cannot be broken down into glucose for utilization.
