Cause For Numbness, Swelling And Sensitivity In The Lips?

My lips are pale, numb, swollen, dry, and extremely sensitive. This has been going on for several weeks, about a month. At first, I over practiced my French horn. Brass players (musicians that play trumpet, French horn, tuba, etc.) play their instrument by buzzing their lips into a metal mouthpiece. I practiced far too long, causing my lips to burn. I rested for several days at a time, but each time I tried to play again, my lips would swell up like a balloon within 5 minutes. At that point, I assumed I had developed a metal allergy to my mouthpiece. Even when I rest for a few days, the swelling doesn t get much better. I ve tried many home remedies, such as: black tea bags, honey, baking soda and water paste, hot compress followed by cold compress. They swelling would go down slightly, but when I touch my lips, they instantly swell again. My lips seemed to be sensitized to the point where they swell up when anything comes into contact with them. I have braces as well, and I m starting to wonder if they are causing the problem. My lips are raw and discolored, pale. Part of the bottom lip looks almost normal (but pale) and the upper part of the bottom lip is bright red and looks raw. It is very dry and swollen very badly. When I put Vaseline lotion on my lips, they burned. I honestly have no idea what to do or who to go to for help, as no one really knows what s happening. I hope I can see a dermatologist soon. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hello,

Since you are using musical instruments, numbness, swelling & sensitivity in the lips can be due to metal allergy or contact dermatitis if you are sharing the musical instruments.

You can take non-sedating antihistamines (Levocetirizine). You can also apply topical antihistamine ointment in the area affected. Take acetaminophen (tylenol) to help reduce inflammation.

You are suggested to see a dermatologist get a skin patch test done to detect contact dermatitis (caused by irritant or allergy). Your treating doctor will treat you with antifungals or antibiotics.

The precaution you need to take is that do not share musical instruments. Staphylococcus aureus or Herpes simplex virus can spread due to sharing of the mouthpiece.

However, if you don't have any other alternative than keep the mouthpiece clean, wash it with water, soap or alcohol. Replace worn out parts immediately & maintain good hygiene.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
