Chances Of Getting HPV Or Genital Warts On The Cervix Other Than Through Sexual Transmission?
I am 63 years old. Had a partial hysterectomy at age 45 -- uterus removed but kept eggs. I have just been informed that I had an abnormal PAP Smear, which revealed I have HPV. Is there any other way to get HPV or genital warts on the cervix outside of sexual transmission. I have been in 3 relationships over the past 35-45 years but always had only 1 partner at a time, even though I cannot with certainty vouch for the fidelity of either of them. I have never in all of my years had a sexually transmitted disease. So, outside of being embarrassed, since I am currently in a relationship I am trying to discern is there any other explanation as to how I could have contracted this virus.

HPV causes genital warts. Sexual contact with an infected partner is the only way one can get it. HPV can remain clinically silent for months and even years without knowledge and therefore, someone who has had multiple sexual partners, it may not be possible to tell when and from whom did the infection came from. Because HPV can remain silent for so long, individuals may not know that they are infected, before it is detected by testing Or when visible warts appear. Importantly, HPV type 16 and type 18 increases the risk of cervical cancer and therefore regular monitoring with Pap smear and colposcopy is advisable in those who carry HPV type 16 and type 18 to detect early changes.
