Chances Of Pregnancy If The Contraceptive Pills Are Missed For One Day?

hi, i'm on birth control pills where i have active pills and placebo pills. a few days ago i noticed that i miss one of the active pills and i got my period that same day (on day 21 instead of day 27 as i usually do) . i've continued taking the hormone pills as usual and my period hasn't stopped yet (its been 3 days) i don't know if i should take the placebo pills (i should be starting them in 2 days) or just start the next pack right when i finish this one...
thanks

Hello,

I assume that there was no intercourse in the week after missed pill and there is no risk of unplanned conception due to missed pill.

If so emergency contraception should be considered, which could be an coil which gives good protection against conceiving for up to a week after sexual intercourse.

If a pill is missed in the last week of active hormone pills, i.e. week 3 - days 15 to 21 of a 28-day pack, then the last week of hormone pills (week 3) should be finishes, and placebo pills should be skipped (week 4), while immediately moving on to a new pill pack the next day.

If unable to start a new pack, then a backup contraception should be used for a week until hormonal pills from the new pack have been taken for seven consecutive days.

I hope your bleeding has settled now. It is worth putting time alerts on your phone to remind yourself to take pills. This will avoid such situations and anxiety it brings.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Sabina Hussain
