Cholesterol 249 With Breakdown Of TG 52,LDL 171, HDL 68. Family History Of Heart Disease. Statin Recommended. At Risk?

I am a 57 year old female with family history of heart disease. My cholestrol total is 249 with breakdown of TG 52,LDL 171 and HDL 68. My doctor is recommeding a statin, but I would like to avoid if possible. Do these numbers put me at high risk?. I am not a smoker or ever was other than family history in excellent health. I exercise 5-7 times a week lost over 30 lbs in the last year. What should I do would love to stay off meds. Thank you for any advice.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
You have positive family history of heart disease, and I presume postmenopausal state, this is good that you exercise regularly and there is intentional weight loss and you do not smoke please keep it up.
Your Lipid profile showed high total cholesterol and LDL level but there is good thing that is high HDL which is good cholesterol.
Please take care of diet and Statin use is certainly beneficial in decreasing risk as it is known major risk factor.
Total cholesterol Use of statin has many other advantages apart from lowering TC and LDL known as pleiotropic effects.
It would be advisable to start statin in your case and yes your Physician is right.
It is in your benefit.
Take care
Good Luck.
