Chronic Chest Pain, Recurrent Bronchitis, Sputum Without Cough, Shortness Of Breath, Fullness In Lung. Reason And Cure?

hello. I have chronic chest pain in the right side for almost a year with recurrent bronchitis and sputum that randomly comes up into the throat without a cough, with occasional coughing, shortness of breath, and a feeling of fullness in the right lung that is relieved after lying down on my stomach and having my kids hit me on the right side of the back several times, which sometimes produces a colored phlegm but most often clear, sticky spit-like substance

You need to be examined by your PCP or chest Physician to rule out interstitial lung tissue infection with pleural reaction/involvement.You will probably need a X-Ray chest, sputum culture and gram staining and haemogram apart from lung function tests to diagnose the problem accurately.COPD will need to be ruled out ,as will chronic inflammatory diseases of the lung and pleura.

Pathologist and Microbiologist Dr. Shailja Puri's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,

You are suffering from symptoms of chest pain on right side, sputum production, occasional coughing, and fullness in right chest.
These symptoms suggest that you are having a primary lung disease most probably chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Are you a smoker?
Since, COPDs have a strong association with smoking. The number of cigarettes smoked per day and the duration of smoking have a bearing on it.
COPD is a disease of airways and has four entities depending on which factor is predominant.
These entities are bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, and bronchectasis.
Bronchitis is inflammation of the airways, asthma is hyper-responsiveness of airways, emphysema is destruction of airways and bronchectasis is infection of the airways by bacteria.
A couple of investigations need to be done to know which entity is predominant.
There is an overlap seen among these entities, however, one entity predominates.
A X-ray chest is the first investigation to be done.
The changes on the X-ray will guide the doctor to order further investigations.
Treatment will be decided by the result of the investigations.
Consult a pulmonologist for clinical examination, diagnosis, and treatment.

Thanks you
Dr Shailja P Wahal
