This question is about my mother. In March, she had bowel perferation surgery. She is 77 yrs. old, was in fair to good health prior to the incident. She has always suffered from depression and anxiety and was on Pamelor 50mg. 1 time a day, Buspar 10mg. 1 time a day and zoloft 200mgs. daily. After her surgery, which went septic, she required cardio version on several occasions. During her long span of care in the ICU , she actually survived 14 code blue s ! During her 3 month stay at the hospital, she was on the roto bed, which swivel from side to side. She is currently awake & aware, has trouble with one of her eyes... blurred vision , has a trach and cannot speak without a speaking valve, could not move when she first woke up, but now has much more muscle tone and strength, but cannot walk. So, basically, she has become aware that she cannot speak, eat or walk. She has simply and slowly had a mental breakdown without her facilties of basic living. She has become hysterical and scared, trying to pull out her trach & peg tube. We can t keep a foley in her. She has damaged herself in that way. We wanted to, as a family, to care for her. We have always been a close knit family and tried to take care for our own, but we feel that we are not hitting the mark . Did she have a brain chemical change? Did something else happen? Is there a medication that can help her? It seems that doctors are so reluctant to talk about medications to help in a situation like this. I thought that a website like this, with unattached physicians might be able to simply offer suggestions without the obligation of any follow-up. This is a huge, case study type, situation. We just are looking for help. Please, help this family, who only want to care for our Mom. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. PS We have an MRI scheduled on her head, but we re feeling sure it s mental. Her blood profile is within normal limits for her age.
