Clogged Ears And Congestion In The Head, Loss Of Smell And Taste. Not Responding To Augmentin. Numbness In The Hand. What Is The Next Solution?

I have had head congestion, my ears feel clogged as if I m underwater, and I can t taste or smell anything for going on 2 weeks now. I was given Amox/Pot Clav 875mg to take twice a day ( Augmentin generic). I been taking it since Monday almost a week now and I feel no improvement. I m also starting to feel my hands a bit numb now. I ve tried several over the counter decongestants as well. How long is this supposed to last??? And what should I do if the antibiotics are not working?

Hello

Thanks for writing to H.C.M. for your query.

I have gne through your query regarding congestion on your head and blocked ears and unable to smell.

Considering your symptoms it appears that you were having cold which later on developed to sinusitis and giving you feeling of congestion in head. This nasal infection is responsible for loss of smell and it progress to throat and than to ear via Eustachian tube, and finally giving rise to blockade in ear.

Thus you are suffering from ACUTE RHINOSINUSITIS WITH EUSTACHIAN DYSFUNCTION.

To treat this you have to do these investigations-

(1) C.T.scan of paranasal sinuses.

(2) Culture and sensitivity of throat swab.

(3) Blood- CBC, ESR, blood sugar- F. & P.P.,

(4) Urine - Routine and Microscopic.

After this a thorough examination and clinical co-relaton with inferences of investigations is necessary to reach to final diagnosis which may be accordingly plan for treatment.

Regards.
