Cold, Cough, Nasal Blockages, Leg Pain. High Blood Sugar Levels. Diabetes Or Viral Infection?
Hello Doctor Good Morning From past five days am suffering with severe cold, cough ,nostrils are blocked and pains in legs and at abdominal.On consultation with medic concluded as viral fever pyrexia.All the test (widal,CUE,CBP,MP smear, ECG , Xray checst were normal).Except the Blood sugar the readings before Fasting-168;PP-291 surprisingly.I do not have diabetes.Would you please help me in knowing whether this raise in levels are due to viral fever or i have been affected by diabetes. Yes, any infection affecting the body, will cause an increase in blood sugar levels. This is because your body releases some "counter regulatory hormones"' to fight the stressor, which in this case', is the viral infection. As a result, these hormones stimulate the liver to release extra glucose. And hence the raised blood sugar levels.
It would be advisable to keep a 3-4 hourly check on your blood sugar levels. If that is not possible, then it would be advisable to check it at least daily. If the episode of viral infection has completely subsided, then keep checking your sugar levels; especially if you have a family history of diabetes or so. If the levels are consistently satisfactory, then you need not worry about diabetes, now. If not, do consult a diabetologist.
