Cold Followed By Dry Cough, Blood In Saliva After Prolonged Coughing. Chest X-ray Clear. Cause Of Concern?

Hi, I had quite strong cold about 5 weeks ago. After the symptoms of cold (full nose , coughing sputum ) went away, I started to have dry cough. About 2 weeks ago I noticed a little blood in my saliva after once prolonged coughing. I went to doctor - he did X-ray of my chest, blood test, then I went to ORL doctor - he checked my throat. All results were negative. Now I do not cough but today I noticed again little blood in my saliva. Should I be worried?

Welcome to HCM.

Blood in the saliva can be due to bleeding in the throat or bronchioles ( airways ). It can be indicative of bronchitis/ chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer,etc. Blood can mix up with the saliva from nose bleeds or any bleeding from the stomach.

You need to get re-examined by your treating doctor. You should get investigations like CBC, bronchoscopy, CT, Urinalysis, repeat chest X ray, blood and coagulation tests done.

Coughing up blood can lead to life threatening conditions. You should take balanced, nutritious diet, watch your weight loss. If you experience sudden sweating, breathlessness, difficulty in breathing, low grade fever , chest pain or discomfort, immediately report to the treating doctor.
