Cough And Respiratory Problem. Start Using Asthalin?

My wife is suffering from caugh and respiratory problem and today doctor prescribed her Asthalin inhailers. Before 10 years I was having the same problem and similar doctor advice but I was afraid to start using Asthalin as and I recovered after 4 days and never got any such problem. Should my wife start using Asthalin or can try other remidies? I am a research scolar in National Institute of Malaria Research and found in my field surveys that most of the Indian doctors promote medicines for malaria which were unnecessary and prescribes malaria madicines even after the blood test report comes negative irrespective of antigen kit or slide negative test.

Hello
Asthalin is given for dilatation of the bronchus. This or its related chemical is a common component in some cough syrups... That is the base for management of asthma. That does not mean it should not be given in other circumstances - for example, most viral infections may lead to asthmatic bronchitis - which will be helped by it. Mild wheezing is heard by by stethoscope; the patient may not be aware... Unless the dose is high and/ or frequent, the possibility of harm is not of much concern. It is very much short acting - it has no long term effects.
Most of these symptoms - viral fever with cough, running nose, throat irritation - disappear often without treatment also. The doctor tries to help to ease the symptoms and make it as comfortable as possible.
So, do not worry. Giving it may not harm. Not giving it may not be a problem
Good luck
