Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my daughter gets the depo shot for birth control, could they cause a significant amount of loss in her breast size? She went from a D cup to a C cup. Also, I was just diagnosed with breast cancer, should I consider my daughter using an anti hormonal birth control that is long term since the hormones in the pill that I took years ago could have been a factor in my cancer?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Depo shots used as contraceptive does not cause decrease in breast size. It may cause alteration in breast size, but most common is breast tenderness and discomfort as side effect. But, gradually these symptoms will decrease. Hormonal birth control does not contribute directly for the causation of breast cancer. Since you are diagnosed with breast cancer, the risk always runs in the family. Hence it is better that she has a regular check up in this regard by means of breast examination and mammogram to make sure that she is out of danger. Hope the information provided would be useful. All the best.
