Could Digeorge Syndrome In An Infant Be Due To Intake Of Wellbutrin During Pregnancy?

I was on resperidone and Wellbutrin when I became pregnant, and stayed on both of them on the advise of my psychiatrist, my son was born with DiGeorge, could it have anything to do with that? He has tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve and he also has malacia of the bronchia and trachea.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Wellbutrin is Bupropion and the drug is an antidepressant drug. The drug is relatively safe drug and can be used in pregnancy without any fear. In various studies the use of drug doesn't result in increased risk of foetal malformations over base line. I have searched some studies and I couldn't find any association of use of Bupropion with Di-George syndrome. Similarly Risperidone is also a safe drug if used under proper prescription. The drug is safe to use but might increase risk of some foetal malformations but association with Di-George syndrome is not there. Please consult his doctor and discuss about the genetic causes.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
