Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could Hydrocephalus In A Child Be Due To Intake Of Zofran By Mother During Pregnancy?
I have a grandson that was just diagnosed with Hydrosephilous on the brain. I am wondering would this be a result of her use of Zophran while she was pregnant. They say the Hydrosephlous is in the brain and on the outer part of the brain. Or could taking any other medication or illegal drug while pregnant cause these issues.
There is no one specific cause of hydrocephalus in the new born babies. However, it may be linked a genetic defect or it may be associated with other neurologic disorder such as spina bifida or encephalocele (sac-like protrusions of the brain). Clinical studies have shown that taking Zofran during pregnancy did not appear to be responsible for the development of hydrocephalus or any other birth defect. Vitamin A (isotretinoin), certain anti-cancer medications and anti-convulsant drug valproic acid are known to cause hydrocephalus and spina bifida in the new-borns if given during pregnancy.
The teratogenic effects of illegal drugs (such as cannabis or amphetamines) causing hydrocephalus are not clear because of the lack of clinical studies.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
