Could Norethisterone Cause Prolonged Period?

I was prescribed for around 2 weeks worth of Norethisterone so that i wouldent have a period on holiday , my period can be regular and then sometimes not this could be due to still being a teen . However after i stopped taking them i got a period a day after and the cramps were one hundred times worse than a usual period ,also it has lasted alot longer (about 3 days longer ), does norethisterone cause your period to be longer ? Is this normal ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Norethisterone may cause your periods to be longer. It is a common side effect of this treatment. It may also cause heavy periods for that cycle.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
