Could A Delayed Period With Light Cramps Be Due To A Pregnancy?
hi doctor i wanted to know if i am pregnant. me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex on early jan 23 and my last period was from jan 3 to jan 8. i am a week or so from starting my period. was i able to gotten pregnant? i been feeling light cramps and my hormones are crazy.
I presume your menstrual cycle is of about 28-30 days.
The unprotected sex you had on January 23 falls on day 21 of the cycle.
The day of egg release (ovulation) is 14 days prior to the next expected menses which would be between 10 and 20 January. The egg has 24 hours life while the sperms are active for 72 hours. Hence a period of oabout one week around the day of ovulation is fertile period.
So your unprotected intercourse falls near this fertile period. suggesting that you do carry some probability of being pregnant. The earliest evidence of pregnancy you can get is by Beta hCG test on the blood. This test is very sensitive and can give reliable evidence of pregnancy 10 days after the unprotected sex. The other test is pregnancy test on urine which can reliably detect the pregnancy about a week after missed period; earlier this test may give false negative results.
I hope this helps to figure out your pregnancy status.
