Could Burning Sensation And Itching In Labia Be Due To Tampons?

My period ended 3 days ago and I had used a regular tampon overnight because there was still a bit of thin blood coming out. When I woke up to take it out the next day there was very little to almost zip on the tampon. It was the same brand tampon I ve used for nearly two years with no issue. Shortly after removing the tampon it kinda felt a little raw in my vagina. I didn t think anything of it cause it was barely noticeable. I had sex that night and felt a burning sensation and it felt chafed inside and on the libia. Today is day 3 and it is starting to itch a little. I have never had this problem before and I can only think it s from the tampon in over night with nothing for it to soak up. It was in for a little over 6 hours. My period is hardly regular so I was sure I would have needed that last tampon, now I wish I hadn t used it. What could it be?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your vaginal and vulval (labia) irritation may be due to tampon. My suggestions are as follows:
1) Wear loose-fitting, breathable white cotton undergarments to air out your vulva and vagina.
2) Take regular sitz baths: A sitz bath is a shallow, warm bath that can help relieve itching and burning caused by vulvitis.
3) Use mild, unscented soaps and warm water to clean your genitals, or just use warm water.
4) Evion cream is to be applied over the vulva twice daily.

If your symptoms don't come down in 4-5 days, please do consult a gynecologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
