Could Celiac Disease Cause Mutation In P53 Gene?

My sister has the genetic mutation with her P53 gene and has a family history of celiac sprue. She may also have Lyme disease. She has battled 8 different cancers in 20 years. Could Celiac or Lyme CAUSE the mutation of her P53 gene or was she born with this? She is 49 and has two small children. Her last cancer was pancreatic and she allegedly kicked it but then it mutated to her lungs on the outside. She is going thru chemo once again but I am so afraid for her children if they lose their mother.

Hello,

P53 is a tumor suppressor gene. Mutation of P53 is implicated in many cancers like:
1) Breast cancer
2) Bladder cancer
3) Cholangiocarcinoma
4) Li- freumani syndrome
5) Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
6) Wilms tumor
7) Lung cancer
8) Ovarian cancer
9) Melanoma
10) Many other cancers

But P53 mutation is not associated with celiac disease or Lyme disease. Your sister must be having germline mutation of P53 gene which means mutations are present from birth and affect every cell in the body. People with Li-Fraumeni syndrome often develop cancer as children or young adults, and the germline mutation is associated with a high lifetime risk of cancers, such as breast cancer, bone cancer, muscle cancer, and more.

The following are few other causes of P53 mutation:
1) Sunlight and UV radiation
2) Environmental carcinogens like tobacco smoke
3) Various chemicals

I hope your sister recovers from the deadly pancreatic cancer. More strength to her.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
