Could Chronic Pain In The Ankle Be Due To Arthritis?

My left foot, on the top, near the ankle, hurts extremely bad when I stand and begin to walk. It also hurts for the first little while that I walk if I am barefoot. If I wear shoes, it only hurts when I get up and begin to walk. I have arthritis in my toes, knee, hips, and hands, could this be arthritis? I haven t done anything I can remember to injure it. It has been hurting like this for about a year.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The fact that the pain has been ongoing for at least a year would point to arthritis but you should consider assessment and imaging to make sure that there are no other causes. In addition to rest or limiting aggravating movements, you may need pain medications and additional treatment (depends on the cause found).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
