Could Delayed Periods Be Due To Metformin?

I have PCOS and I started taking metformin 850 February 20 and my 11 day period ended on Feb 19. My periods have always been irregular. I sometimes never know when I m going to get them. I was on depo for a few years which stopped my periods. I just recently stopped in April 2014 because the side effects are horrible!. I haven t seen a period since I ve started metformin and it s been 43 days. Yes, me and my boyfriend have had unprotected sex but I ve taken 2 clear blue tests and they were negative. Has the metformin delayed my period?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

Metformin if anything helps to regularize your menstrual cycle and help promote weight loss. In my opinion factors like weight gain, infections, poor diets, strenuous exercise, and the very underlying condition PCOS are plausible causes for the menstrual irregularities, not the metformin.

Best wishes.
