Could Discomfort In An Infant Along With Mucus Stools Be Due To Aptamil?

Hi, I have a 3 week old baby girl. She weighted 6ibs 15oz at birth (delivered my c section) but dropped 13.5% of her weight. She is now 6ibs 12oz. She has been very unsettled for over a week. When we lie her down on her back she seems uncomfortable and pulling up her legs, and often spews. She is on aptamil first milk and is taking at most 2.5oz every 3 hours. She has plenty of wet nappies and her poos are seedy and musucy. I was wondering if I should I change her formula or if you have any advice, thanks Yvonne

Hi,

It is possible that your baby's discomfort and mucus stools could be related to the Aptamil formula. Some infants may have trouble digesting certain ingredients in the formula, leading to gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, bloating, and discomfort. It may be worth considering switching to a different brand of formula or discussing your concerns with your pediatrician.

They may recommend trying a hypoallergenic or partially hydrolyzed formula, or they may want to evaluate your baby for any underlying medical conditions that could be causing the symptoms. In the meantime, it may be helpful to try feeding your baby smaller, more frequent meals and keeping her upright for a period after feeding to help reduce spitting up.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
