Could Exposure Of Child To Toxic Oil Fumes Be A Matter Of Concern?

Hi, we were in a plane yesterday and we have been exposed to oil fume in the air system. The pilot taxied back to the gate where they fixed the oil leak but we had to wait in the plane while they worked on the issue. I have a 4 year old and I am worried we have been exposed to toxic fumes. No symptoms so far, some coughing but that is pretty usual for him with many allergies. Should I consult a doctor, is there anything that can be done to undo the toxic inhalation if there was one? Thank you.

Hello dear,
Thank you for your contact to HCM. You are very careful parents. It is experienced that people who have long blamed exposure to jet engine fumes suffer from memory loss, tremors, lethargy and other symptoms of so-called aerotoxic syndrome. Some scientists found organophosphates – toxic chemicals found in jet oil – in the blood and fat of pilots. But usually passengers do not fly enough to be put at risk.
Toxins can cause numbness, nausea and a racing heart. I suggest-
1. Observe baby, if some following up symptoms will occur you should contact your doctor.
2. Charcoal 1 tablet/10 kg/dose for absorption of toxins and allergens, you can divide for 2 times. You can use it during 5 days.
3. Antihistamines and montelukast( Montecope) medicines during the episodes.
4. Make sure that your baby is well protected from cold, dust and other allergens.
Wishing him and your family a good health.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
