Could High BP Cause Abnormal EKG?

I had a physical yestarday. I'm 64 and about 25 pounds overweight. My EKG came back abnormal and my blood pressure was 160/100. I suffer from hypertension and the doctor upped my milligrams of amlodipine from 5 to 10. I'm wondering if the abnormal EKG could have been caused by the high blood pressure.

Thank you for the query.
As per the information provided, you are 64yrs old (gender not mentioned), overweight, hypertensive (on medications) with reportedly abnormal ECG. I would like to know your duration of hypertension and whether you suffer from any other condition like dyslipidemia (or ischemic heart disease).
ECG (EKG) abnormalities can definitely occur in long term hypertension (specially the poorly controlled ones). This leads to left ventricular hypertrophy, which can cause the ECG changes. However, without knowing what ECG changes have been noted, it is difficult to comment whether the changes are due to hypertension or due to any other abnormality (like ischemic heart disease).

Since, you have a history of hypertension (requiring 10mg of amlodipine), I would advise you to for two further tests - a lipid profile and an echocardiography (which will rule out any cardiac dysfunction). You should go for a strict salt restriction in diet for your hypertensive status.

Hope this helps you out
