Could High Blood Pressure Be Related To Increased Bowel Activity In An Elderly Person?

Hi I am a 70 plus year old female of slight build. My two health issues are IBS and osteoporosis. Otherwise I am considered healthy and active for my age. I went to my GP to check out a sore throat and earache. He took my BP as a precaution. It is normally 130/75. This reading was 150/80. My question. I am currently experiencing five bowel motions a day. I have yearly colonoscopies and two years ago had a Rectoplesy. Since that I have experienced increased bowel activity. Is there a connection between a high BP and frequent, but normal, bowel motions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There doesn't exist a relationship between blood pressure and bowel movement. The diet can affect the bowel movements. The blood pressure 130-75 mmhg is within normal levels for you. 150 -80 is a bit elevated and you should keep taking the medications correctly.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka, General & Family Physician
