Could History Of Being Hit On Head Cause Memory And Concentration Problems?

I hit my head really hard on a metal object around a year ago. Although I didn t go to the Doctor immediately, I did mentioned it a few months later (when I had my yearly physical with a new Doctor). My Doctor didn t feel there was any reason to be concerned. By the way I returned to school two years ago. Since the injury, I feel that I m struggling remembering what was really easy to remember before. When I try to read my textbooks I look my concentration quickly. Could it be because of banging my head or is it just another wonderful part of aging. (Getting real close to 60!)

Hello,

You have history of being hit on the head. You didn't get it treated then. Presently, you are having difficulty in concentrating and in memory. Damage to the part of the brain that affects memory can affect differently depending on the location of the brain involved. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, or visit ER, tell your difficulties and if needed the attending doctor will order for a CT, MRI or X-ray, whatever needed to study any brain injury affecting the memory.

He may order few more required blood tests to be done. Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis made. However, sometimes the reports may come up clear (normal) with no complications at all. At such times you will not need any treatment. Some patients have difficulty with learning new tasks or remembering specific skills. It may be treated with CBT, talk therapy and given conservative treatment. Stay away from addictions, smoking, drugs, alcohol, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
