Could Inability To Lose Weight Be Due To Thyroid Problems?

Hi, I am 59 years old, had a subtotal hysterectomy 12 years ago and have also gained almost 100 lbs, which I am unable to lose through a healthy diet and exercise. I am always hot and sweat profusely in the summer, but have cold extremities. Is it still possible for me to have thyroid issues? Thank you!!

Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
Yes an under active thyroid may be the cause of the difficulty in loosing weight.
You should check the thyroid hormones (TSH and FT4) and if they result within the normal ranges, thyroid is excluded as a cause of your symptoms.

Probably the lack of estrogen is the cause and you should have taken hormonal substitutional therapy during the first 5 years of hysterectomy.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you will have further queries in the future.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
