Could Influenza B Be Affecting My Healing Tonsillectomy Site, And What Can I Do For Severe Throat Pain?

Hi, i currently have influenza type B and symptoms are pretty bad, however my throat is killing me! I should mention that I just had a tonsillectomy a month ago and I had a really hard recovery time, I also hemorrhaged and had to have a 2nd surgery two weeks in.. So i m concerned that my almost healed surgery site is being affected... also am wondering if there s anything I could do for my throat pain, naproxen isn t helping and chloraseptic spray only lasts about 5 minutes? Also I was only prescribed Bromfed DM, but since I have a wet cough (I can feel the mucous but it feels stuck in my lungs) Is it okay if i take mucinex DM with the Bromfed DM? Or should i alternate between the two?

Hello,

Severe throat pain, fresh bleeding, or difficulty swallowing fluids can need urgent ENT post-surgery follow-up examination. Stay well hydrated, as dryness makes pain worse. Naproxen sometimes isn’t enough for post-tonsillectomy pain. Keep your treating doctor informed about your pain and discomfort, he may consider giving you medicines that will help relieve your pain.

Because of the hemorrhage history, avoid taking aspirin or any other medicine that increases bleeding risk beyond what’s already prescribed. No, do not take both the cough suppressants together, Bromfed DM and Mucinex DM both contain dextromethorphan. It is not wise to double the dose as it will cause side effects.

Since you are feeling that mucous is stuck, being a post-surgery patient, you are advised to inform your treating doctor, if needed he will be switching you to plain guaifenesin (plain guaifenesin, without DM) if it is safer. However, if you experience symptoms like fresh bleeding from the throat, inability to swallow liquids and severe shortness of breath, then don't waste time at home. Go to ER, you need urgent medical help and support.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
